„Gladiator” is one of the films that can be easily described as „memorable” and „moving”. It is loosely based on the glory days of the Roman Empire than a faithful adaptation. The main characters are played by Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi and Richard Harris. It was directed by Ridley Scott and the music was mainly composed by Hans Zimmer. „Gladiator” won five Oscars and twenty four other awards.
This historical drama tells the story of the Roman general Maximus who wins the battle with the barbarian Germanic peoples. A dying Emperor, Marcus Aurelius asks him to assume power in Rome after his death. A jealous, wayward son of Marcus Aurelius, Commodus, beats Maximus: he kills his father and proclaims himself emperor. Being angry at Maximus for refusing to take the oath of allegiance, he kills the general’s wife and son. Maximus, who manages to escape, is seriously injured and ends up in a slave market and then at school of gladiators in Africa. A new chapter begins in a legionnaire’s life. Meanwhile, Commodus is planning great gladiatorial combats in the Colosseum. Maximus takes up the challenge, but after the ultimate battle, he dies.
„Gladiator” was thought through from the beginning to the end. Great cinematography and historical costumes make the viewers feel as if they were really moving into the world of gladiators, arena fights and deadly clashes in defense of honor, dignity, and loved ones. Despite the passage of time, it is extremely touching. Whether today, or tomorrow – to this spectacle, viewers will come back. And that is what it is all about.
